Polonsky Family Bursary
April 5th, 2007

The Society Against Violence Everywhere (S.A.V.E.) community  group awarded the Polonsky Family Bursary to an at-risk youth at their meeting on Apr. 5.

The bursary was made possible through funding from Durham College and was named for the Polonsky Family for their ongoing commitment to educating youth in the community. The bursary is open to at-risk youth, to a youth who has been a victim of violence or is a member of a family who has been victimized. These victims must overcome numerous challenges in the pursuit of higher education.

“This is the answer to helping at-risk youth in our community; education not incarceration,” said Deputy Chief Chuck Mercier.

The recipient of this year’s award is a 21-year-old student from Ajax and the funds have been applied to his tuition at Durham College. The student did not wish to be present for the award due to family circumstances but wished his sincerest appreciation to everyone involved who made this possible.

Dr. Gary Polonsky was thrilled to have the bursary named after his family. “I love to give people opportunities to further their education; people who would have not had a chance otherwise.”

Walk To Stop The Violence

Way to go Durham

Congratulations the hundreds of walkers that came out to support the Walk to Stop the Violence on June 4th, 2006.

The Walk to Stop the Violence was a 6 km walk of solidarity and hope. Hope for our future kids to live a lifestyle free from bullying, fighting and gun and gang wars. This walk was for everyone and made a strong statement that we will not stand for violence in our community, or anywhere. It served as the first of many activities that show that we stand united as a community and a society against those that feel committing violent acts is appropriate and to lend strength to one another in our cause to stop these acts.
